How to Safely Use a Space Heater
Posted on February 15th, 2017 by DLWPO
While we rely on our main heating systems to keep us warm, space heaters are perfect for small spaces, for boosting the room temperature, or for people who are very sensitive to the cold weather. However, it’s important that if you do choose to use a space heater at home, that you take a few precautions. Space heaters account for 32% of home heating fires and are involved in 79% of home heating fire fatalities. Keep you home and your family safe (and warm) this winter with these space heater safety tips.
Space Heater Safety:
- Choose the Right Size for Your Space – Make sure that you purchase a space heater that is the right size for your home. Don’t purchase an over-sized heater!
- Keep It Away from Foot Traffic – Place your space heater in an area in your home that is not highly trafficked. You don’t want family members (or pets) to touch or knock over the heater on accident.
- Keep the Heater Away from Furniture – Keep anything that can burn, including bedding or furniture away from your heating equipment.
- Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector – CO alarms are an essential part of your home. This will help you avoid risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
